A planned development of protected wetlands in Queensland has been scrapped almost 10 years after first being proposed.
Most proposals to clear habitat in Ramsar sites, whether it's for a retirement village, coal port or massive renewable energy zone, have been rejected. There's only been a handful of new listings in the last two decades but at least another 67 Australian wetlands could be eligible for protection. The Ramsar Convention was a treaty signed in 1971 in the city of Ramsar in Iran to conserve the world's most important wetlands.
in Queensland and a renewable energy terminal in Western Port Bay in Victoria have historically been rejected. But a nomination has not been made yet and parts of the marsh have been destroyed for mining infrastructure like a railway that was approved to clear 88 hectares of the wetland in 2012.While little progress has been made on pursuing Ramsar in internationally significant wetlands in Australia, there also hasn't been any federal oversight to keep up to date with what wetlands are nationally important.
