OPINION Even after losing his seat, Tony Abbott refused to acknowledge that he's out of touch with Australia, writes Peter Hartcher ausvotes

And he is, in part, right. The former prime minister has been driven out of the seat he's held for 25 years and one of the big factors is the renewed sense of urgency over climate change.Credit:Abbott agreed that his long sneer at climate change told heavily against him, while the victorious independent Zali Steggall declared to her electorate: "I will be a climate leader for you".

He is right that climate change is a higher priority in wealthier seats, and Warringah, enfolding Mosman and Manly, is one of the very wealthiest in the country. In other words, that the Liberals are usurping Labor among its heartland, and that seems especially true in Queensland. But while Abbott is partly right, he is willfully overlooking the other great factor in his defeat.

Fairfax gets it completely arse about re the election and yet it's apparently Tony Abbott who's out of touch with Australia ! Fuckwits.

Or to even say 'I concede'. Such a weird speech, where he couldn't actually say that he had not achieved enough votes to bother counting preferences.

A man in a boxing ring against a better opponent but he couldn't accept that he was beaten.

Who cares? He’s gone.

It’s about TonyAbbottMHR the individual not the party. 😕

... which Australians?

Lol. He’s so out of touch

Just let him go in peace.

After this week, I just hope never to hear about this has-been again. ausvotes

When Australians finally wake up, Australia will be a waste land not worth living on.

That’s how out of touch he really is!

The election is a Win/Win. The Libs won and Tony is out for good.

The most out of touch segment of Australian society is it's journos. Please take note Age, because you'll go broke even faster if you keep printing the same old lefty opinion BS.

Sour grapes a bit there. His electorate is out of touch with wider Australia. The people have spoken. We reject identity politics, climate alarmism and union thuggery. I welcome the chance for a more centrist Labor opposition. Hope they don't go even further left....

It’s a big guess but I wonder if the media attack (right or wrong) spurred a few voters Australian wide to reconsider the right.

youroutoftouchyouroutoftouch

I’m out of touch with Australia. Australia has lost the plot. Cyclists on roads, vegan protesting, Rugby Australia. Gone!

But Hartcher, a hilarious Labor cheerleader, is definitely in touch with the voting sentiments of Australia, right?

“I’ll not let one bad day ruin 25 hood years”

Compared to the The Age editors he's a realist

Just like The Age is out of touch?

Just don’t race off to London to try and see the Queen in a huff like you did last time you lost....that was just embarrassing!

I think The Age is out off touch with ordinary Australians

After last nights Coalition win, maybe Tony isn’t out of touch with Australia, he’s just out of touch with 1/2 his electorate.

Interlime He is correct. Just not all of it. It just depends on what part of Australia

He ISN’T out of touch, he was bounced but the country just voted for 3 more years of homophobic, racist chauvinism.

Abbott and Fraser Anning being defeated were the two positives to come out of last night.

I hope Abbott’s ego can cope with no longer being in politics?

What is it about you people that you are so scared of TonyAbbottMHR He was up against everything that Labor, Getup , the media and the unions could throw at him.

Yet the media won't admit it's own hatred of Abbott go figure.

Tonyland

Climate change is Overrated and Exaggerated.

And that’s why he’s gone. Into history. It’s been a great day. This clown, Pauline, Anning. All the racist out of touch flogs gone.

By the look of the election result, he is not out of touch the leftist Age is

“He conceded that he was out of step with the people of Warringah. “But rather than admit that he has been wrong about climate change, he suggested that Warringah was out of step with Australia.”

It's the federal version of 1988 state election when in NSW, Michael Yabsley lost his seat to Clover Moore in Eastern suburbs of Sydney. LNP had a landslide win that night.

Tony Abbott and coalitions climate views have been vindicated, GetUp and Independent Inc lost.

Australia still voted Liberal but not for Tony, that's got to hurt

The Age is out of touch with the majority of Australia.
