Australian tennis bad boy Bernard Tomic has advanced to the second round of the Australian Open for the first time since 2017The 28-year-old was piggy-backed to the next stage by Japan's Yuichi Sugita, who was forced to retire due to injury during the third set. By that point Tomic had seized a commanding position in the match, fighting back after dropping the first set to lead 3-6 6-1 4-1.
Sugita retired soon after calling for a trainer to receive medical attention, with the world No.104 having plaster applied to the left side of his torso. He resumed the match after a brief break but threw in the towel soon after, gifting Tomic his first main draw win at his home grand slam in four years."I'm hoping ," Tomic said in his post-match press conference.
"You know, I didn't feel it for five, six days. I felt, let's say, last week I think I practiced with Cilic and this is before I had to play I think Polmans, and I felt it for a day. "Prior to this I felt it in the last three, four days of quarantine, so I kind of took it easy there. And then I was like, I'm going to take these next few days off. Didn't play that match against Polmans. Took a few more days off to feel right. Then I didn't feel it for about five days and yesterday I felt it.
