When my daughter said she was looking forward to travelling again – and wanted to do it with me – I was filled with joy, writes Helen Cooper. | OPINION

It was my birthday recently, the second in lockdown, and it was the words in the card from my daughter that really made my day, “I can’t wait for our future trips to Europe.”

It’s always been a joke that my daughter and I would have a shopping trip to Paris – and I would foot the bill.A month shy of 18, in year 12, my daughter has missed virtually two years of school and all the fun events that go with that, not to mention the arduous task of remote learning and the added stress of looming exams.

It was a welcome distraction to go into the city for her COVID-19 jab at the Melbourne Convention Centre. Our annual dental appointment happened to be on the same day. Much as we like our dentist, never could we have imagined we would look forward to a visit. I’m sad that children of all ages have missed so much of their education compared to other parts of the country, and that time in their lives when they should be carefree has been so uncertain. Yet they realise they are lucky. There is social media to keep them connected, though I’m not sure it’s always a blessing. My daughter says she finds it difficult to stay motivated.
