Leaders on the Tiwi Islands are calling on the federal government to scrap plans for new laws which could speed up approvals for offshore gas projects.
"The process is going ahead without more consultations with the clans, and it's really affecting them and the clan groups are not happy," he said.by 18 months, adding $450 million in costs, by proving in the Federal Court that Santos had not carried out enough Indigenous consultation.Last week, the federal government gave environmental approval for construction of the pipeline to go ahead.
"If the federal government goes ahead and makes changes to this legislation, then it can go ahead and fast-track all of the environmental approvals for all of these mining projects," she said.Under the government's proposed changes, the federal resources minister would be given more power to change the rules under which the federal regulator, the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority , approves projects, including rules on consultation.
"It's clear the uncertainty is leading to significant delays. It's leading to significant expense for the industry."Santos general counsel Michael Abbott told the committee that the current requirements on gas companies to consult Indigenous groups were delaying projects. Resources Minister Madeleine King told the ABC the laws were not intended to weaken consultation requirements or environmental protections.
