The Titans are exploring the possibility of new signing Carter Gordon joining the club before June 30 – but any request for an early release looks set to be rebuffed by Rugby Australia, who say the departing playmaker may still be called upon by the Wallabies.on a two-year deal, making him the second Wallaby in eight months to switch to the NRL after Mark Nawaqanitawase was recruited by the Roosters for 2025-26.
Informed sources with knowledge of the matter, who requested anonymity to speak freely, said the Titans were keen to get Gordon in swiftly and would even look to make space in their top 30. But Waugh, who said in December that Nawaqanitawase would still be eligible for the Wallabies despite his NRL switch, reiterated his stance when asked about a potential early release for Gordon.“I still have exactly the same view, in the fact you have to win the next Test match and you pick the best team you possibly can to win the next Test match,” Waugh said.
Rugby Australia could save some money by getting Gordon and Nawaqanitawase off their books, but RA officials are also mindful they don’t want to roll out the red carpet for NRL clubs to conduct more raids. And while it is feasible neither player will make Schmidt’s first Test squad based on Super Rugby form, a call-up could still only an injury or two away.
