Elle Paton has just moved into a new house that is not much bigger than a caravan. Yet she could not be more pleased

.Ms Paton discarded many of her belongings before moving into her tiny house, which is just over 20 square metres in total.

“There is a part of me that is still nervous about my wardrobe,” she said. “I’m going to have to downsize just a little bit more than I was expecting.” Port Phillip Council believes the tiny house in St Kilda is among the first approved as a long-term permanent private residence in an urban setting, although they are growing in popularity as holiday accommodation.Ms Paton’s house has a kitchen, lounge, bathroom and an upstairs reading nook which will also be used for storage. It has a stowaway bed.

Ms Paton’s house was towed from the Yarra Valley where it was built by a group called Tinyhouse2go. It arrived on Friday morning and she moved in that night. Some of the final touches, including the deck, were completed on Saturday.Ms Paton said towing the house through a small laneway to the property was a tight squeeze. “We had five centimetres on either side of the lane so it was a bit hair-raising.”the house can be connected to mains power if necessary.

Ms Paton works in the tiny house sector, having left a corporate career. She worked with the council through its environmental leaders course to set up her new home, which she will open to visitors who are interested in tiny houses.

Say my nameSally Smart knows. Shes been there. If you have only a passing familiarity with the art world you might not know her name but Smart is a contemporary artist of the first rank. Her Exquisite Pirate collage, where canvas and fabric pirate ships with jewelled female pirates sailed along white-walled galleries, exhibited from New York to Shanghai. She is a vice-chancellors professorial fellow at the University of Melbourne and is the only female artist, actually the only artist, to have been a trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria and a board member of the National Gallery of Australia.
