For the first time in decades the two songs won't be sung at the Last Night of the Proms, an extravaganza staged by the BBC at the Royal Albert Hall each September and watched or heard by millions on television and radio. The numbers will only be played by the orchestra.
The statement didn't work. The decision has touched off a clash that may test the public's patience with contemporary reassessments of Britain's imperial history. A snap YouGov poll on Tuesday found 58 per cent of respondents thought the anthems should be performed with the full lyrics. Only 8 per cent said they shouldn't be played at all. And just 9 per cent liked the option the BBC had settled on.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson led a chorus of opposition on Tuesday which included figures from the left and right of politics. "The number of times that the Last Night of the Proms was raised with me as an issue before this BBC nonsense? Zero."for many years. Australian cellist Maureen O’Carroll once refused to perform the song at the Sydney Opera House in honour of her Irish parents. And last year, British pop singer Lily Allen said it shouldn't be played again.and a BBC columnist, also thinks the rousing tune is problematic.
Asked on Tuesday whether the songs had been dropped because of their association with imperial history, outgoing BBC director-general Tony Hall replied: "The whole thing has been discussed by David [Pickard, the director] and his colleagues, of course it has."
BevanShields Every year it reminds me of Miss Havisham's cake.
BevanShields Perhaps there can be an international agreement? So, if Britain gets rid of ‘Rule Britannia’, Turkey could return the Hagia Sophia to the Christians? The Egyptians could tear down the pyramids. The Norwegians can apologise for the Norman conquests...
BevanShields Nope, leave it alone. Give it up and you become a slave.
BevanShields 🤣 “Time we stopped our cringing embarrassment: “ Boris Johnson to throw himself on the sword
BevanShields Is there any other point to the last night of the Proms than the so -called “toe curling, embarrassing, farrago of nationalistic songs” ? I took family - husband a Pom- to Sydney Opera House a few years ago. We had a wonderful time...Can we just change the words and do it again?
BevanShields Totally agree. Lets get on with life as we meet it daily, in the present. Nothing can repair past damage considering those damaged are dead & buried. It is time to put the past where it belongs - behind us all. Revving up contrived emotional hurt, that is not personal must end.
BevanShields He's merely pandering & bowing to the PC Brigade. 'Rule Britannia' 🇬🇧
