Editorial: Now is the moment to start building on the momentum of political co-operation we've seen from decision-makers in spearheading the response to COVID-19

What is normal? Do we even remember? It's only a matter of weeks since the COVID-19 shutdown face-planted many sectors of Australia's economy, but already a new normal is taking hold.

Driven by an amalgam of social distancing and job cuts – at least 800,000 people have found themselves without work in a matter of weeks – the road back to recovery will be years in the making. But it must start somewhere, and with the COVID-19 curve flattened for the moment, it's time to start mapping out the way forward.

Australia has done its fair share, and rightly so. Without the JobKeeper program, the unemployment numbers would be much higher. But supporting an economy in freefall is vastly different from locking in a policy framework that will lift it out of its COVID-19 state of paralysis.Top of mind should be the governing structure. For all of its occasional misfires, the national cabinet has been an enormous success.

for the Coalition's industrial relations agenda and union-busting integrity bill as a way to promote growth. It may have some merit, but surely this is a time to turn down the heat on such hot button issues. There is no shortage of potential flashpoints ahead as some of the largesse being handed out is reined in.
