At its height, the contemporary art collection acquired by Gene and Brian Sherman after they arrived almost penniless in Australia from apartheid South Africa grew to 900 works.
In the forward Gene Sherman writes that the works “represent so much to us personally… [bearing] testament to our life and love as a couple, our shared history across time and place … including the friendships we developed, and have maintained over decades, with treasured artists.” Famously, Brian Sherman and Laurence Freedman, a cousin of Gene, founded EquitiLink in 1981, swimming against the fund management current to create a tsunami of wealth. By the time of the Sydney 2000 Olympics , EquitiLink was managing $5.5 billion of funds.
