Opinion: Travis Head has long been seen as a man for the future. Australian cricket needs him to be the man for now. It is time for him to deliver, writes Mark Taylor | SMHsport

When I was captain, if David Boon or Michael Slater went cheaply, I was confident the Waugh twins would bail us out.

A Test hundred is a Test hundred but making 161 against Sri Lanka in Canberra does not compare to an Ashes ton or a big score against India. These are the series that count - they're almost worth double. Imagine the extra confidence selectors would have if Head could come in at 3-50 and make 150 to swing the match. It might even solve a few leadership issues.

It will be a big tick for Wade if he can score runs at the top. If he does not and Burns comes good, there will be some tough discussions to be had when Warner and Will Pucovski are available. The pairings at No.3 and No.4 of Labuschagne and Smith, and Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli, even themselves out, though the Indian skipper's absence after the first Test is a potential series-changer.
