There was only one place for Labor’s true believers to toast the life and legacy of Bob Hawke today: the former prime minister’s famous old watering hole

After a long and tiring election campaign, opposition leader Bill Shorten was in a relaxed mood as he stopped in at the John Curtin to raise an elbow to Labor’s longest-serving prime minister on Friday afternoon.

So deep were the pub’s connections with the comrades of the trade union movement that at one point there were rumours they were going to buy it.“When he was a union advocate in the 60s and 70s, he spent a fair bit of time here socialising,” Mr Shorten said. “If the walls could talk.” They ordered cans of Hawke’s pale ale, a beer brewed in honour of the former prime minister. An “easy-going tropical-style” beer, it was a long way from the mass-produced lagers consumed so heavily by Hawke’s generation.

Boxed red and white wine has been replaced by sangiovese and pinot grigio on tap. Written on the specials board was no roast of the day, instead a southern fried. Smoking, long banned in Victoria’s pubs, exists only through the old cigarette machine in the corner. The AgeHowever, the Hawke connection lives on, often through the stories of those who were there at the time.

Bill will never be Bob 😉

Probably charged it to Centrelink !

The manliness that made everyone love him, the manliness being squelched out of boys and men at every opportunity.

A Legacy of HAWKY would have to be that alcohol use is not necessary in Politics and if he stopped for the eight years perhaps it should be removed from Parliament House to ensure sober judgements as he would have done? A different P.M. was reported being UIL and failed to vote?

BobHawkeRIP was a great politician by anyone's standard. But he was also very lucky to come to power when he did and to have a very talented team at his disposal.
