Tree trunks with a diameter of more than two metres – some closer to seven metres – lay felled on the sides of Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, sections of which remain closed to all but essential travel.Despite emergency services warning people to stay away from the area unless absolutely necessary, and the Dandenong Ranges National Park being closed until further notice, the CFA and Ambulance Victoria had to rescue an injured woman from Sherbrooke Forest on Sunday.

On Monday, the Australian Defence Force joined the Country Fire Authority and State Emergency Service recovery efforts in the Dandenong Ranges, Gippsland, Ballarat and Hepburn regions. The majority have been stationed in the hardest-hit Dandenong Ranges, where navy, army and airforce personnel are handing out generators to residents without power.Increasingly, Australia’s defence forces are being called upon to help with domestic responses.

Inside the community hall is a free supermarket, containing donated produce, canned goods, essentials like toilet paper and feminine hygiene products, children’s toys, and even donated new boots and socks.
