Thomas Beattie played his entire career with a secret but has gone public in the hope it will help others to be open about their sexuality.

Beattie, from Goole in Yorkshire, says he felt like he could not announce he was gay while playing for a living.

Beattie, who now works in business in Singapore, is only the fourth male professional footballer who has played in Britain to come out as gay after Fashanu — who tragically took his own life eight years afterwards — German star Thomas Hitzlsperger and American Robbie Rogers.Beattie told Advocate he felt pressure to keep his sexuality a secret.“I literally felt like I had to sacrifice one of the two: who I am, or the sport I loved before I could remember.

“Society me masculinity is linked to sexuality and so being an athlete playing a physical sport felt like a huge contradiction.”He came out to friends and family just three months ago and says he hopes to encourage others to be open.“I told close friends and family three months ago, which was when I decided to embark on the journey of speaking openly about it.

If you come out gay and people are still offended that you play sport at a professional level then those people don't deserve your time. I'm just here 'you do you bro. play well, get that w' If you play for my team and come out Gay you better tackle Israel Folau 10x as hard.

Meh....If he came out in the 80s.....now that would be a headline....

Congratulations.
