Dialysis patient Jeffrey Malawa Dhamarrandji has not been home to Arnhem Land in four years and there's a dispute about whether he can get home for treatment.

Mr Dhamarrandji is one of 14 or so patients from Elcho Island stuck in Darwin for treatment because nurse-assisted dialysis is not available there.

"We as old people have to be there to be with our young ones, to help them on," Alan Dhamarrandji said.Dialysis patients stuck in Darwin said children on Elcho Island needed older residents back home.The group reached out to the Indigenous-run Purple House for help but said the NT Government, which owns the building they would like to use, failed to sign-off on the arrangement before caretaker mode.

"Those mob from Elcho Island really deserve to be sitting on a beach, cooking a fish in the sand and reading their grandkids bedtime stories," Purple House chief executive Sarah Brown said.Ms Brown said Purple House had already helped patients return to Elcho Island on a short-term basis forThe organisation purchased two dialysis chairs and together with the local Miwatj Health service said it was ready to provide the service.

Ms Brown said there was a long queue of nurses wanting to work for Purple House and expressions of interest for the island job.
