A Sydney primary school has changed the names of its sports houses to reflect Aboriginal words rather than early colonists.
The project coincides with NAIDOC Week, which celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievements and culture. “We are really excited our school has changed the house names to Aboriginal names,” she told SBS News.“Banksia has a really interesting connection to country - as in, when the wildfires go through, they actually self propagate so it takes on the country and actually blossoms because of it,” Ms Monks told SBS News, explaining her symbol. Ms Monk said having the names prominently displayed at the school provides an opportunity for much-needed conversations about Aboriginal culture.
The initiative recognises and celebrates the Eora Nation, with Elders engaged in sharing their cultural knowledge.

We need to fight balkanization. Why celebrate divisions?
I grew up in Gunnedah and our sports house where named after the local tribes.
SBS that is brilliant - long overdue and the beginning of the long road to closing all the gaps! thank you and well done!!
We had Aboriginal names for our sports houses at HS back in the 1960s
SBS Love this!
geoffrey_payne No offence but I know of a school in Perth that did that roughly 20 years ago.
Are they taught about the massacres conducted under the blessing of the white man church
When I visited NZ they had the English name along the Moari translation....like for example New Zealand/Aotearoa displayed in their museums, libraries, art galleries, etc......it was pretty cool. More inclusive than in Oz.
Useless thing happening in Redfern hot abo spot
NAIDOC2020 AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe Absolutely LOVE this! 👊🏿👊🏾👊🏽👊🏼👊🏻
Wow 😳
Personally I think the name of our 3 Eastern States should be changed from their cap-tipping colonial origins.
Will they give up teaching the kids to learn writing to match indigenous “culture “
I love It covers the essentials. It never pretends. I rely on it to give me simple truths about the world. Thank you.
Try saying one of these names to Google. Good luck. I got Bruno Mars 5 times 😂🤣
I'm sure that won't be confusing... 🤔
just more woke bullshit that does nothing other then create more diversity. Teach them kids life skills and prepare them for the real world. What is wrong with you people.
Shoutout to Toormina Public School in Coffs Harbour which already had indigenous house names when I was in kindergarten back in 2000.
Are they after more Government handouts? 🤷🏻♂️. Claim the 1% 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑
Wonderful 🙌🏼🌟❤️🌟🥰🥰🥰🥰
Where's the Four-Ex House?
Unnecessary. The indigenous didn't build the schools.
IMHO we should respect the indigenous communities but also the past as a whole in order to avoid making mistakes.
Early colonists? Do you mean British citizens?
It would help Sydney's preschools to learn about native plants and native edibles, bushcraft & appreciation of Aust nature and learn a local aboriginal language.
Great idea. Now they should introduce the Aboriginal language as a second language
Love it!!!
Fantastic idea 💡 time for the traditional language of your area to be known NAIDOCWeek2020
Great way to destroy our history and confuse kids. Warnings about Marxists in the education system, seem to have been ignored.
Sweet! Now all you have to do is give back their land. dignity, and rights.
