There is a push to give Aboriginal people a greater voice in decisions on mineral exploration of sacred sites in SA, after a contentious project was approved for Lake Torrens in the state's outback.

A contentious minerals exploration project in outback South Australia, approved by the Premier, is prompting calls for a change to heritage laws.A minerals exploration company has been given approval to drill at Lake Torrens, a sacred siteThe SA Government says the drilling will not permanently affect the lake's cultural heritage

Kelaray, a subsidiary of Argonaut Resources, made the application under Section 23 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act, which allows the minister to approve the damage or disturbance of sacred sites. "Not rammed through Parliament in a couple of days, but properly considered and Aboriginal voices heard."They weren't heard the last time. Their voices were ignored in the parliamentary debate, just as they're being ignored now by the Premier when it comes to Lake Torrens."Mr Marshall was not available for an interview, but a Government spokesperson defended the Premier's decision.

"The authorisation requires Argonaut to undertake its exploration in accordance with conditions to minimise impacts of the program and to keep interested Aboriginal parties informed on a regular basis of the progress of the company's work.

This is outrageous. Disgusted. It deserves international condemnation and a blockade to put the Franklin into the shade.

If it's truly 'sacred' won't the gods protect it?

Nothing changes 🥱

Cultural vandalism.

Make the question to the PM direct.

Abo blood. Abo soil. Abo nationalism.

'Cultural heritage' means no one knows what it is and no one cares to know, neither the law nor the education, so that these sites will end up happily being blasted off like the 460,000 yr old Juukan Cave, and culturally obliterated forever. A bloody crime against humanity!

I’m sure the kick backs will more than cover the locals concerns

It’s a dilemma but moving forward we have to see both sides and respect both.

I can't do silly Australian politics anymore, let the world dictate Australia's direction.

Sacred my arse

“The SA Government says the drilling will not permanently affect the lake's cultural heritage.” So ... don’t drill then. If they start to extract minerals it will change it forever.

Surely sacred means you can’t mine it - nor should you be able to explore. Sacred sites on most gold mine sites I have visited are ring-fenced / labelled off limits - simply not allowed to go there

This sort of wanton defilement is truly indecent. A monument to greed and short-term political expediency. What is wrong with .marshall_steven? Does he not possess a modicum of decency & morality saparli

It means desecration, destruction, and no one held responsible for the clean up.

Did NO ONE learn from the Pilbara (Rio WA) mining company desecration of the caves site before Is this not also in a National Park area, Premier?

So what pagan ritual & sacrifices have taken place there, when & by how many that contribute to its alleged sacredness, if there is no documented evidence for it is it fair & reasonable to call it bullshit? Where is the proof of it having been commemorated in the last 200 yrs

Is nothing sacred to Australia?

. Oh yes, the sacred lake... praise be to the sacred lake. .

Sacred! Come on. Are we to believe that we can no longer use the minerals to enjoy our modern life with cars, computers, food, water, housing, transport, air travel etc, etc as all of those things require stuff from so called sacred sites. Baloney!

How did the SA Premier come up with that conclusion Has his ancestors been in Australia for 50000 years or more

why tf didn't Pascoe write about this...?

Means nothing

It means capital always comes before culture.

Sacred?

It means nothing is sacred where money is involved

Bugger all. $ will suddenly fix it all.

Is there nothing is not sacred thede days!

Some people also believe Noah's Ark landed on the Mountains of Ararat. That doesn't make them sacred.

The LNP don’t give a shit about cultural heritage

Sacred? They make this stuff up.

The more important news is why does ABC continue to pay staff drug dealers?

Don't let this happen!😟

GJLysaght For which license is that exactly? Heli supported drilling by Argonaut started already January 2019 in EL 6407. Iron oxide, copper, gold. Will there be processing in Australia? Using which primary energy source? marshall_steven What will be the diesel consumption?

None of these sites are culturally significant until a developer shows interest. It’s nothing more than a money grab by Indigenous groups.

Atom bomb testing site, nuclear waste dumps, now this, it is nothing but complain, complain, complain.

What is government thinking? Or is it!

They built a bridge in SA despite anger over proven cultural heritage? Pre social media and outrage era.

Premier Steven Marshall is also abrogional affairs minister ....

Well they blew up a 40k+ old cave, so I’ll take a guess the backward fossil fuel loving LiberalAus will pave the way for them and turn on the drills

It means it will have little holes in it

It’s another rioTinto case and perhaps you’re asking the wrong people, bloke.

The aboriginal nation should throw its weight around to block every mining project it can. The whole world & the whole human species will benefit.

As usual “ Cultural Heritage “ will be replaced with Royalty Payments ! Ho Hum !

It’ll all be ok, don’t get too worked up.

Sucks to black in Oz and without title

Oh let's stop pretending like anyone's going to do anything about it. Money talks, and nobody has enough money to stop the mining companies from doing whatever they want.
