The newly anointed chief executive of telco Vocus, Ellie Sweeney, plans to keep a “healthy paranoia” towards cybersecurity risks following major data breaches atCurrently the COO at Vocus and formerly a senior Telstra executive, Ms Sweeney will next month succeed outgoing CEO Kevin Russell. Staff were told of her promotion on Wednesday afternoon.

“I have had a healthy paranoia about security from the day I started here. We have invested in major programs of work in terms of upgrading our security and, in the last three years, we have doubled our security spend,” she said. Optus lost the personal details of up to 9.8 million current and former users in September, and just a few months later Medibank became the victim of a ransomware attack that saw medical details posted online.“We see more companies wanting a greater level of security,” she said. “The healthy paranoia comes from ... just always being aware it is a huge risk for any corporate in Australia, and we take it very seriously.

Still, amid the volatile economic conditions, Vocus did can its planned trade sale of its retail business led by the Commander, iPrimus and Dodo brands in December.Ms Sweeney said the retail business remained a “strategic asset” for Vocus and that investment would continue in this area.“It’s a great business, it’s actually had its best half in the half we just had ... we will continue to invest in [retail’s] growth, and we will evaluate that in a year or two’s time,” Ms Sweeney said.
