'This is the storm': Inside the call centre dealing with Australia's abusive men

The Men's Referral Service says it's seen a 37 per cent increase in calls from men seeking help with family violence.

"Even though it's perhaps more difficult for people to report family violence with everyone at home at the moment, our referrals are still very high, and might be just the tip of the iceberg."It's almost puzzling to Sarah and her team of counsellors, whose work normally goes unseen, that the coronavirus has sparked huge public interest in domestic violence.

Or, as his colleague Mark* puts it: "Job loss is not a driver of violence, it's an enabler, a stressor on him. How is he managing those external stressors? It's that step or his choice to use violence that's the problem."For starters, Aaron says, counsellors will never see the full picture of what's happening because callers generally downplay their behaviour.

One of the biggest hurdles counsellors try to overcome is the man's sense — and many apparently show signs of it — that he is the victim. "It's not the disagreement that you're questioning, it's other clues around what she's saying or doing in response to the disagreement. Or if the man is speaking degradingly or belittlingly of his partner or blaming her ... those kinds of signals can indicate there is maybe something happening with his behaviour.""Our intervention is only a sliver of what this man's life is like and we can only engage or open up on what he's willing to," Aaron says.

Gee, perhaps they hang up quickly because they soon realise that they are being screened as perpetrators in denial. And then even if taken seriously there is no-one to refer them to anyway Feminism means GenderBias not GenderEquality

From what I have personally witnessed and had to deal with repeatedly... even though I do not believe there exists any formal study on this... there should be... I believe strongly that a lot of the violence from men is spawned by the games of football.
