The announcement came over the PA: “”This is the final boarding call for passengers Victoria and David … Beckham.” I rushed to the gate.

I’m in the loo at Oslo Airport, putting on the new lipstick I’ve just bought on a four-hour layover on my way home from Finland – when an announcement comes over the PA.

In the terminal proper, dozens of people, trying to look like they’re not, are rushing towards that gate. It’s like an Olympic race walk event. We all reach the gate just in time to see the terminal door close on the aerobridge. There’s a collective slump of disappointment. We disperse in a far less urgent manner to that in which we have arrived.

There’s nothing like spending a few hours in a Middle Eastern hub … The Orchard at Hamad International Airport , Doha. I also love that you can be anyone you want to be. I once spent an hour trying on Breitling watches in Zurich airport. Even if I win the lottery, I will probably never be a luxury watch buyer. But I was for that hour.
