It’s been five years since Upper Yarra principal Scott Tully had a “crazy idea” to plant a vineyard on school grounds. This week, the school will launch its first drop.

Upper Yarra Secondary College will launch its first bottle this week, five years after principal Scott Tully had a self-confessed “crazy idea” to plant a one-acre vineyard behind the school oval.pinot noir will be stocked in 25 outlets and is the culmination of the work of about 40 students who have completed the school’s certificate II in wine industry operations since 2019.

The school sold its grapes to the Endeavour Group’s Oakridge Wines, which allowed students to participate in the fermentation and production process without tasting the wine. This year, he was given 48 hours’ notice to mobilise school staff and students when weather conditions became just right to harvest their grapes. The program has already been successful in employment terms. One former student now works in a microbrewery, while others have taken jobs at orchards and vineyards.

Cook said he would like to expand the project to offer more places to students in years 11 and 12 but this required support from registered training organisations.
