Its three music editors decide what will form the most listened to playlistsEvery week, Hannah Brewer, Jazmine Huggins and Amelia Jenner spend almost half of their time at work – about 20 hours – listening to as much new music released in Australia and New Zealand as they can., the trio are some of the most powerful people in the local industry, deciding whether artists make it into key playlists that materially influence how $250 million in royalties is allocated.

Three of the most powerful people in Australian music are Amelia Jenner, Hannah Brewer and Jazmine Huggins. They listen to 20 hours of music a week and curate Spotify’s local playlists.“We do have a powerful, critical role, but we look at it from a place of privilege,” Brewer says.Most of Spotify’s music recommendations are generated by an algorithm based on a user’s taste and listening history.

Huggins says she looks at how long people listen to a song for and audience data. “Age range, where they’re from geographically. Mainly those things,” she says.Artists begin in the smaller playlists and progress if they do well. The editors also discuss the playlists with other Spotify editors in other parts of the world, boosting local artists when they think they have a shot.

“And now he’s in our biggest playlist and was on the cover. And we also put him on a billboard to reflect that a couple of weeks ago.”
