The prime minister has suggested the government will grant citizenship to a heroic security guard who confronted knife attacker Joel Cauchi.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has decided the heroes from Saturday’s Bondi Junction attack, who put themselves in harm’s way as Joel Cauchi went on a deadly rampage at a shopping centre, have passed the character test with flying colours.

Damien Guerot was lauded as a hero after CCTV captured him trying to fend off Cauchi on an escalator using a shopping centre bollard. Guerot later said he, his friend Silas Despreaux, also a French national, and other witnesses helped lead police inspector Amy Scott toward Cauchi, where she shot him dead.

The pair went to investigate and, after a woman said a man was stabbing people, the two men saw Cauchi just metres away.“The bollard was there, Silas was like, ‘We need to do something, we need to catch him,’” Guerot said. “We were in open space, there was nowhere to hide, nothing to protect ourselves … if we miss him, we don’t have a chance.”Bondi stabbing fatalities: Ashlee Good, Jade Young, Dawn Singleton. Bottom row from left: Pikria Darchia, Faraz Tahir and Yixuan Cheng.

“I think that on Saturday, we saw some of the best of human character at the same time as we saw such devastating tragedy.” “Faraz confronted him and was stabbed. After that, he jumped on me. I tried to defend but got stabbed,” Taha said. “I informed on radio regarding the situation.”
