The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners has warned Australia must learn from mistakes in its response to the COVID-19 disease to guard against the next pandemic.

"Any mass gathering of that size, regardless of the cause ... has the potential to put the community at risk," Dr Bartone said.

"Are we going to have a reliable supply of billions of face masks and other personal protective equipment … are we going to again have inadequate stockpiles and insecure supply chains?" he said. "If we get a vaccine are we ready to manufacture and distribute enough of it?" The college also wants a coordinated approach to combat dangerous and false information spread by some celebrities and charlatans promoting unproven virus "cures" and vaccine conspiracy theories."The government can fight against [misinformation] with one central, consistent message with a strong evidence-based approach," Dr Nespolon said.

GPs have repeatedly urged the federal government to do more to assure the public that their practices are safe, and warn that patients with chronic illnesses are putting themselves at greater risk by avoiding routine appointments or not seeking medical help if their symptoms flare-up for fear that they would be exposed to the virus.
