A key part of this process was smart inverters, which would enable AEMO to"spill" excess power generated from rooftop solar panels at times when the network was coming under stress.
At the moment, households can freely export any surplus power produced from their solar panels into the grid, with state-owned power provider Synergy paying a minimum subsidy of 7.1 cents per unit. But she said it had become a significant liability for the security of the electricity system now that almost one in three homes on WA's south-west grid had solar panels.
Who said we aren't producing enough renewable energy?
someone else pay the cost; I've paid enough
If demand drops because solar is filling the gap shouldn’t energy producers drop the cost of power to customer at that time so non solar customers will use more? Supply and demand?
Rather than fighting solar and wind etc these companies should have been making energy storage systems. Battery, pumped hyrdo..... Enabling them to utilise the excess and make money off it!
In a solar storm all of those PV arrays will get fried too, & feed the spike into the grid with enough energy to destroy key infrastructure. If this happens on a global scale it could be years before industry has recovered enough to replace the parts of the grid that were damaged
Yes, don't use it. It damages the environment more than traditional power sources.
If 'free' solar power is overwhelming the grid, then WHY are power prices so high
This is a joke, right ?
Residential solar panels, battery storage can manage voltage in distribution networks – and increase their PV hosting capacity. Thereby turning the problem into a solution
H/holds or even estates should be energy self sufficient; decent battery banks. State doesn't want generated power? = no grid connection fee. Hopefully electric cars will become popular; energy 4 recharging stations self gen or?. Time 4 our leaders to think outside of coal & oil.
Headline should read, “How simple leadership and policy can ensure the grid and electricity market rules can catch up to the amazing solar uptake by Australians who are genuinely acting on climate change”
No mention of 'batteries'!
Electricity generation systems are always about $billions. The public are buying electric cars, now they are available. This will make a lot of battery available for grid balancing at minimal cost to the utilities. They just have to organise for it.
Headline should read something like “Government slow to encourage adoption of batteries to deal with solar excess”
