Australia’s UN envoy Mitch Fifield has filed a declaration at the United Nations rejecting China’s maritime claims around contested islands in the South China Sea.

Australia is now claiming China’s actions are inconsistent with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and therefore invalid. It comes as China has stepped up its aggression in the disputed waters including sinking a Vietnamese fishing vessel. “Australia has always been a good international contributor,” Minister Hawke said. “These are international waters, these don’t belong to any one country.
