Opinion: ‘The worst of both worlds’: How the new model for the republic gets it wrong

This week the Australian Republic Movement made one of its regular forays into public debate. After two decades the campaign body resolved its internal divisions over its model for an Australian republic. A worthy cause for a change well past its time.It would see each state and territory nominate one candidate for election, and the Federal Parliament would nominate up to three candidates. All candidates would then be put to the public at a national election.

Unfortunately for the ARM and for us, its new hybrid model manages to achieve the worst of both worlds. More of a Frankenstein monster than a fairer federation. The model retains the tag of a politician’s republic. Each state government gets to decide whom they deem palatable for Australians to vote on. The republic is about proving ourselves as a confident country that can stand on our own two feet, and yet this model suggests the ARM itself does not hold much confidence in Australian voters.

. And an elected figure with a national mandate will always have a better claim to govern than a prime minister sent to Canberra by their local electorate and nominated by their party colleagues. This model would give the victor such a mandate.Beyond diluting the role of the Parliament and installing a powerful president – one assented to by our political elites – the electoral incentives built into this model would fundamentally change and, importantly, divide Australian politics.

These are large, important changes that the ARM will have to reckon with before asking the Australian public to support its model.

Can’t have a republic without a new flag - and we find it impossible to agree on a new flag.

I’m not so sure that anyone would care about state-based allegiances, especially not NSW and Victoria, but the rest of the criticism seems valid, especially the part about our best and brightest not being interested in contesting a national election. Peter_Fitz ?

Turnbull's model remains the best one.

Agree. Especially that national govt will be made up of and govern for Vic n NSW only. Sod that.

How would it make us better governed? There’s so many things wrong with the proposal.

EU drug regulators, World Health Organization experts and the former chairman of the UK’s COVID task force all cited mounting evidence mRNA COVID boosters aren’t working and the strategy should be dropped.

‘People don’t want Trump or Shane Warne’: Hybrid model proposed for Australian republicThe country’s head of state would be chosen by voters from a shortlist of 11 names selected by state, territory and federal parliaments. AusRepublic any thought given to the state government nominating multiple persons then having a state election to determine the nominee. At the moment it is still only going to be political types who have a chance. Would each state have to nominate a separate candidate? Does anyone outside of the Brisbane Times[?] take any notice of this mumbling, bumbling fool, Peter 'the Pitz' Simmons My stomach churns at just the mention of his name!!

‘People don’t want Trump or Shane Warne’: Hybrid model proposed for Australian republicThe country’s head of state would be chosen by voters from a shortlist of 11 names selected by state, territory and federal parliaments. michaelkoziol Pretty sure the biggest drag on the republican movement at the moment is the presence of Fitzsimmons. michaelkoziol Maybe a Big Brother or I'mACelebrity type challenge where they get voted off by the public one at a time till the winner is left. michaelkoziol I dont see the need to spend billions of $ to change a system that works perfectly well just so that the Queen who has so little to do with us is no longer our head of state. Then we get only a rich person like they do in the states & the buying of influence increases for no gain

This is the latest plan for Australia to become a republicThe national republic movement has unveiled its 'Australian Choice' plan for the country to find a new head of state - but the Australian Monarchist League isn't impressed. Then do it. Yep, you give Canberra three candidates, each state and territory one candidate, you put them all up for a vote and if the Feds and one of the major states are the same party guess who wins and there will never be a Tassie head of state. Yeah that should work. Derr
