Sydney is set for a reprieve from a week of heavy rain that caused devastating floods in the city and its surrounds, with river levels receding and meteorologists saying the worst of this latest weather event has passed.
“This week we’ll see a cold front come through on Tuesday and Wednesday. We’ll see some more isolated showers, but we shouldn’t see any more than about 10 to 15mm [of rain] on the coast, and about 1 to 5mm inland.Despite clearer skies, the NSW SES received 70 requests for assistance and conducted five flood rescues on Saturday night. It has so far completed 5120 rapid damage assessments and declared 572 homes uninhabitable.
An SES spokeswoman said that high levels of operational activity would continue this week due to localised flooding, particularly in the Hunter and Windsor areas where some evacuation orders are still in place. The Bureau of Meteorology was on Sunday reporting that flooding had eased in north-western Sydney; the Hawkesbury River at North Richmond fell below the minor flood level of 3.80 metres on Sunday morning and was falling further throughout the day.
