Most medical regulators including Australia's demand that COVID-19 vaccines be 50 per cent efficacious at a minimum. So what does this mean? And is this number high enough?

Vaccines approved by regulators so far have only been found to reduce the severity of COVID-19, and it's still not known if they can prevent those inoculated from getting infected in the first place, spread coronavirus to others, or how long the protection might last.

And while a 50 per cent efficacy rate target may appear to be low at a first glance, experts suggest it's enough to make a difference in a global health emergency.What do we mean by vaccine efficacy versus effectiveness?First, it's important to understand the difference between vaccine efficacy and effectiveness.

"Efficacy is how well the vaccine works in a clinical trial. Effectiveness asks: 'How does it work out in the real population?'" Dr Esterman told the ABC.Testing in animals. Does the vaccine produce antibodies? Does it protect against illness? What dose is necessary?Phase 2:Testing in a larger number of humans to confirm its effectiveness.After the vaccine has been rolled out, ongoing surveillance to make sure it's safe and doesn't have long-term adverse effects.

But Dr Esterman said if the same vaccine was rolled out in the community at large, this efficacy number might fluctuate, given that the trial may not have accounted for every single demographic variable.
