The Waratahs concede 56 points a game against NZ teams: the worst record in Super Rugby history | samphillips06

Waratahs boss Paul Doorn says head coach applicant Jason Gilmore won’t carry the can for NSW’s woeful performances despite statistics showing the Tahs’ concession of 56.25 points per game is the worst in any Super Rugby competition ever played.

The highest average of any Super Rugby side since 1996 was the Southern Kings’ side of 2016, who let in 45.8 points per game. Narrowing the results down to games only against New Zealand opponents - as the Waratahs have experienced in the last month - the 2002 Bulls conceded an average of 51.6 per game in their five matches against Kiwi sides that year.

While the franchise have endured a torrid run with injuries, the remarkable statistics only crystallise how important the next head coach appointment will be for chief executive Paul Doorn. The successful candidate must be able to fix the massive defensive problems. Doorn said the decision about whether a high-profile defence coach would also be required would be made after the head coach was chosen.
