Culture in other countries has traditionally been art galleries and cathedrals, museums and restaurants. For young people there’s another attraction.

You can’t understand India until you’ve been to a cricket match there. I’m not saying that by the time the umpire calls stumps you will magically make sense of this continent of a country, but still, you can’t fully appreciate the passions and the madness of India without watching cricket.

Oddly enough, it’s taken Australians a while to appreciate the cultural significance of sport in other countries, particularly when it comes to the travel experience. We might be pretty into the footy back home , but as soon as we head out on holiday that interest wanes. I went to a baseball game in Japan and it was a riot of tradition and fanfare. Here’s an American sport that has been given a distinctly Japanese makeover, where only one set of fans cheers at a time, and servers walk up and down the aisles with beer kegs on their backs ready to top up your cup. Tell me you can’t have a good time there.
