In a strange case of art imitating life, Servant of the People stars Volodymyr Zelensky as a high school history teacher who gets elected president of Ukraine. And it’s about to hit Australian TV.

, it’s fair to say most people didn’t know who Volodymyr Zelensky was six months ago.

Given the obvious parallels between Zelensky’s real-life ascension to political power and his character’s arc, there is a natural desire to watchand search for clues, or a sign in Zelensky’s performance that might foreshadow what would come next.Or, like me, you might find yourself hung up on the more superficial: just how fresh-faced Zelensky looks in the series .opens with Zelensky’s character, Goloborodko, sleeping through his alarm.

Zelensky was the creator and star of Servant of the People, which ran for three seasons between 2015 and 2019/ After being sworn in, he is introduced to his seemingly never-ending roster of staff: a team of Thai masseuses, specialised zookeepers at the presidential residence’s private zoo, a designated “personal motivator” to pump up the president’s self-esteem.Every so often, the show delivers a moment that feels completely bizarre. In episode five, Goloborodko is trying to get control of a rowdy parliament.
