A discussion on the seriousness of concussion in sport and the need for football federations to address the issue to avoid future lawsuits.

I write something based on concussion in sport, saying it’s serious and not to be trifled with. I rant that while footballers who don’t pay heed risk ending up with severe brain damage , football federations who don’t clean up their act will rightly be buried under a mountain of future lawsuits.

Most administrators, commentators and players now understand – this is serious! They are playing for more than big-money contracts on this, they are literally playing for their futures. And, tragically, there are now enough real-life examples of the perils of ignoring concussion – see Mario Fenech, Steve Mortimer, Steve Folkes and dozens of others – that most of the public now get it, too.

He then did a series of podcasts on the subject, but when I tried, I couldn’t follow those either. I think he is working somewhere as a commentator of some sort but, also very sadly, he only seems to make headlines when ranting on concussion, usually at me.This week, I am apparently a “parasite” for writing about concussion at all, and only do so as I am “trying to remain relevant”. Something like that, anyway. Whatever.

This will no doubt generate another rant from James. So be it. It will at least help keep him relevant as a commentator, I guess, as his sole point of difference from other recently retired footballers.I want you to mark it on your calendars – July 22, 2028. That’s the date when the next total eclipse of your heart, and the sun, will take place in these parts.

Whatever that weird, tribal thing there still in us all – which makes people turn a bit weird during eclipses – will be there in full. Sixty-thousand people, with sunnies on, will mill about, waiting for the climax of the eclipse. This week, Port Adelaide forward Jeremy Finlayson was suspended for three weeks for having called an Essendon player a “fa---ot”.great outcry about the penalties handed out. Pocock was the first professional sportsperson in Australia to make an official issue of it, and a decade later the fact that it is unacceptable is ... accepted by all.
