Critics have tried to shut down the Granny Smith Festival Queen Quest, but founder John Booth has no intention of giving it up | michaelkoziol

Just five finalists made it to the Eastwood Shopping Centre on Saturday to find out who would be crowned this year's Miss Eastwood.

For the uninitiated, Granny Smith was Maria Ann Smith, a resident of the area who in 1868 "accidentally" grew the first batch of green apples that now bear her name. Mr Booth often uses his newspaper to rail against climate change and daylight savings, which he describes as "messing with the clocks, watches and time pieces".

This being the City of Ryde, political vendettas are never far from the surface. Last year's pageant winner Divya Ahlawat was keen to stress: "It's disappointing that the Labor Party actively boycott this event when its intention is to uplift women."

'Hackers' help police find thousands of new leads for missing persons casesOnline enthusiasts generate thousands of leads after a single day of 'ethical hacking' across Australia. If during their sleuthing they'd have come across war crimes committed by the US or their allies and then decided to make them known to the public, they'd be looking at 175 years in a high security prison in harshest condition and being smeared by ABC's 4corners. FreeAssange It isn't news until they get a result. Last time I checked it wasn't illegal to go somewhere else and not tell anyone unless it was due to an illegal act. I am wondering what right these nerds have to go searching for anyone just because some idiot relative or friend can't get the hint and mind their own business.

Cruise ship passengers revolt over missed stops, blocked toilets, intermittent Wi-FiHundreds of angry cruise ship passengers are demanding refunds after operators skipped ports that were part of the Norwegian Spirit's two-week European itinerary. No Wi-Fi ,, lol ,, may as well stay a home. Oh my god. Why is this a news story? I get it they're annoyed. I would be too. But this is not news. If only they would revolt about something slightly more important than intermittent wi-fi. I wonder how many had thought to bring a book along. Even a crossword puzzle All the other shit I could handle, but fuck with my internet access and there'll be Hell to pay!
