The rise of the helicopter parent at Australian universities.

Australian academics are dealing with a new and unexpected force on campus: parents.

National Tertiary Education Union national president Alison Barnes, who recently worked at Macquarie University, said she increasingly received calls from distressed parents who wanted to review and discuss their child’s grades.“It was time-consuming.” “That puts a lot of pressure on kids to do well. If kids aren't passing then that can lead to parents getting involved.”

At Monash University, student ambassadors are trained to tackle questions from parents in the lead-up to open day.“Parents are coming in mobs and the numbers have increased,” Monash University education lecturer Sarika Kewalramani said. “Families, carers and friends play a vital role in ensuring students transition well to university, are able to manage their studies and to navigate any bumps along the way.”Every year at Tianjin University in China, more than 1000 parents camp in tents on campus and look out for their children as they settle into college. And in the US, a popular app provides the parents of college students with access to their child's academic and financial data.

One Victorian university employee, who works in student support, said she was shocked by the lack of resilience she was seeing in young people.

These parents going to be following their adult children into the workforce also? They really have got to learn to let go.

The difference is that these parents probably OWN helicopters for real....

Been going on for years and I used to reject their progeny when they came for jobs at my company, I knew it wouldn't be long before their parents started the BS

Private schooled millennials. Tutored and coached their entire school life and when it comes to learning like an adult, they need a cuddle.

How soft we have become it’s sad yeh it’s a lot of money but if you want a degree these days sadly it costs.

Tertiary sector morphing into quick $’s RTO model that decimated TAFE standards in VET sector. Low to non existent entry requirements for our HECS tax funded local students & 100k international full fee cohort keep those dollars rolling in. Where & what is TEQSA paid to do FFS!

Why are schools & now universities pandering to these overbearing, ghastly people at all? Tell them to let their kids find their own lives to lead. IOW, tell parents to bu**er off! Sheesh.

Treating it like any other 100k plus investment

Undergrad uni is for certain things: finding out who you are, learning how to adult and getting qualified to take your place in the big wide world. You can’t do any of those if you’re still tied to the apron strings (regardless of who’s wearing the apron).

Time to let them go/fly away?
