The work of volunteer firefighters is most visible when large swathes of the country are burning. But in outer suburbs and rural areas, firefighting relies on volunteers like my family year-round.

That year, while he was working, a fire began down the road from our family home where Mum was. He told Mum to take the cat and leave. It was a false alarm, although he didn't know it then, but nevertheless he had been allocated to another blaze.

When volunteers go out to a bushfire, it might be fore an eight-hour shift or two before returning home. But these shifts can turn into sleepless days if there's trouble getting people in or out, or if there's more work to do.Something that's changed over the past 20 years is that now we can keep in touch with volunteers when they're on a break.

But as I'm talking to Dad, he's sending out volunteers for three days to areas with limited phone reception, no electricity, and food shortages.
