Just a fortnight after being released from a POW camp, South Australian cricketer Graham Williams was being applauded to the middle at the home of cricket, writes Greg Growden

Keith Miller had a favourite photograph. It held pride of place on the lounge room wall at his Sydney Northern Beaches house. It was of a motley crew of cricketers walking onto a ground in England.

It was Graham Williams, the South Australian opening bowler who had provided Miller with what he considered his most emotional sporting experience when, some weeks earlier, he had walked out to bat at Lord’s, representing the RAAF against a British Empire XI. One consolation was that the roast lamb and jacket potatoes on offer at lunch, as well as the afternoon tea, were his first proper meals since 1941. Williams appeared bewildered by the crowd’s reception, peering around him with a stunned look as if he could not believe where he was. In Miller’s mind, it was as if he was saying to himself, "This can’t be true. I will wake up shortly". Williams was walking "as if in a trance".

Really a tear jerker this one... I find the lack of multiculturalism in the team absolutely refreshing. A true rarity now days.

'Everything is possible': The tech companies bringing farming to the inner-cityA high-tech new approach to farming promises to be cleaner and greener. But the challenge is great. This is a terrible idea. Will we use our precious drinking water to irrigate? Will we grow under lights in a sun-drenched country? Will we forsake our soil in favour of nutrient solution? This is part of how cities can operate in the future, like giant self sufficient spaceships but on & under the surface of the Earth. Powered by fusion reactors, recycling & refabricating everything, getting extra materials from seawater. Then most farmland can go back to nature.
