The new project could create dozens of jobs and provide a shot in the arm to the embattled nearby town of Pine Creek — but a population of threatened ghost bats poses a hurdle.

"There's a lot of people who are also wanting to understand what's going on, because there are other proponents around here who are wanting to mine, and ghost bats are becoming an issue for them too," Mr Edwards said.

Dr Damian Milne, a senior scientist at the NT Department of Environment and an expert in microbats, said:"The number one threat that's been identified for ghost bats is loss of habitat and degradation due to mining activities. In a statement, a spokesperson said the NT mine proposal had been referred to the department in 2019"because of its likely impacts on the ghost bat."

The rare mammal takes precedence ALWAYS or will TSCommissioner once again prove how irrelevant she is ? along with envirogov sussanley

How about 'Proposed NT gold mine could endanger rare, tiny mammal but will most likely get the go ahead'?

has incorrect headline. 'The NT gold mine putting a rare, tiny mammal in jeopardy.' Fixed!! auspol species bats endangered

Or should read A gold mine putting valued rare species at risk

Mmmmmmmmmmmm

Who do they think they're fooling at the ABC? How bout 'the NT gold mine putting a rare tiny mammals future in jeopardy'?

So, err? This headline could be written from the perspective of the already existing bat perhaps?

The arrogance of people. This animal is putting nothing at risk. It is the mine that is putting this animal at risk.

just relocate the bats No big deal Gold export is way more valuable than bats Bats carry diseases like Hendra n corona virus

Rewrite your headline: NT GOLD MINE WILL PUT RARE TINY MAMMAL'S FUTURE IN JEOPARDY.

NT gold mine putting rare, tiny mammal in jeopardy. FFS ABC, haven't we lost enough wildlife in the past few months alone?

Rather than centre the headline on our greed for a shiny mineral, how about you centre it on living beings. “The NT gold mine that puts this rare tiny animal’s future in jeopardy.”
