Opinion: Prince Philip demonstrated that a life of duty and endeavour will ultimately be more celebrated than one dedicated to the relentless pursuit of personal happiness

There is no tragedy in death when it claims the old at the end of a good and full life. A family will grieve for its own loss, a wife for the absence of her stay and companion, but at 99 years, there is no truncated potential. Death is the full stop which allows us to contemplate the perfection of the sentence.the outpouring of admiration for the man was almost universal. Republicans joined monarchists in praising his deeds. Progressives joined conservatives in honouring his achievements.

The Duke of Edinburgh was a prince of paradoxes. In cleaving to tradition, he had to break norms. The monarchy is a quintessentially conservative institution – it exists to perpetuate traditions that stabilise society and only survives in our modern world as long as it continues to perform that function.

A “male feminist ally” before his time, Prince Philip gave up his own rewarding career as a naval officer to support his wife in her role as Queen. He adhered to the protocols demanded by her position in public and comforted, strengthened and made her happy in private. He carved out a fulfilling and dignified position for himself as Queen’s consort which should be a lodestar to men who fear a loss of masculinity from a world in which some partnerships chose to prioritise the woman’s career.

'The Prince’s objection was that the cause of ecological action ... had shifted focus to “relentless” activism producing little of “practical value”.' What exactly should they have done instead? We've known this for 30 years, but govt's still don't take the threat seriously.

You can stop now SMH.
