Maitland was struck by flood repeatedly from 1949 until the record floods of 1955.abc.net.au/news/australian-floods-1950s-same-weather-forces-record-rains/101694992In the 1950s, flood and rain records were set in New South Wales that stood unchallenged for a lifetime. Until now.As a result, the SES was formed, and dams and levees were builtUntil this year. And New South Wales' wettest year ever was also 1950.
While attention has focused on La Niña's role driving eastern Australia's wettest years, there's intriguing evidence that the Indian Ocean Dipole or IOD was also in its rain-promoting phase in some of the wettest years of the 1950s. The Indian Ocean Dipole was in its negative, rain-promoting phase for both 2021 and 2022, just like the mid-1950s.Flood risk in Australia changes dramatically from year to year, driven by changes in the big climate drivers such as La Niña, according to Anthony Kiem, a hydroclimatologist from the University of Newcastle.
"We also know that when a La Niña occurs back-to-back with another La Niña, that chance increases again. "So when you've got an IPO negative phase, the chance of a La Niña year event is significantly increased. And we know when we get a La Niña, you get increased chance of flooding." What was known was that something had to be done to protect lives and property, after so many years of flood disasters."The state Labor government of the time said, 'We've got to do something different from what we've been doing to get on top of this problem'."Government did two things really. They formed the SES. And they spent decades building levees and flood bypasses, spillways, to try to manage and to a degree control floodwaters.
Fast-forward to 2022 and the IPO is once again negative, La Niñas and negative IODs have lined up back-to-back again, and New South Wales towns have disappeared beneath unimaginable floods. And there's a new wildcard in calculating flood risk — climate change. In other words, some locations may experience more flooding, others less, depending on how climate change affects local weather patterns.

We havnt seen anything Yet .
if the 3% human CO2 causes ABC 'climate change' why doesn't the other 97% natural CO2 (or is this too complicated for the ABC?)
Err it rained but lots
Interesting to see that 1974 was Australia’s wettest year on record and 1973 and 1975 in the top five. All three were also part of a Triple La Niña and caused severe flooding.
Great old footage! I used to look at satellite pictures of Western nsw and think the wide mostly dry river beds would never get full.
Weather in the news again? Must be a slow news decade.
glowbull warmin'
