Opinion: The pains of beholding my country from a distance

I moved away from America while on the eve of completing my first book. It was a coincidence, but I couldn’t help but fantasise how that small detail connected me with my heroes.

Mine, blessedly, was one of exploration. Always prophetic, Baldwin understood. In a 1977 interview, he recalled: “A lot of young Americans, white or black, rich or poor, have wanted to get away, as a means of getting closer to themselves.”Indeed, I searched for myself and thought I might find me in an unlikely place. I hoped distance would lend me some truths about my home country and its sins. I chose Australia.

I grew hyper-sensitive to each side-eye and rude remark. I awaited the racist confrontation that would certainly soon arrive. But one never did.

My country or our country 🤔

Australia is sick of this cycle of manufactured bullshtt hate & self loathing fairy ‘everything and every I don’t like is racist’ bedtime story. Get over yourself & grow the F K UP.

Interesting article. Us white fellas were not brought up to be racist towards African-Americans. But we were brought up to be racist towards Indigenous people. And that we certainly are.

Live: NSW Now: Sydney water bills drop after pricing overhaul, Ray Hadley breaches decency rulesMORNING BRIEFING: Household water bills in Sydney will drop by 7 per cent next month after an overhaul to water pricing based on dam levels, while talkback radio broadcaster Ray Hadley is found in breach after making on-air threats to a social media user. Higher water bills when dam levels are low is about the stupiedest, meanest, unfairest most unsuitable strategy I’ve ever heard. Maybe Sydney water price should be directly linked to population, rather than indirectly via dam levels?
