Numerous MPs warned the cash refunds were financially unsustainable and said Labor needed to maintain its commitment to reform.

Graham Perrett, whose Brisbane seat of Moreton is a franking credit hotspot, conceded the policy was toxic at the election but maintained the country could not afford to keep the entitlement forever.

Julian Hill acknowledged many voters would see a $500,000 cash refund for one person as "excessive". He was open to altering the policy but wanted to wait for the party's internal review of its failed campaign. There are now two broad camps within Labor: those who say the policy to scrap refunded franking credits can be modified to neutralise the political sensitivity, and those who argue it should be scrapped entirely.

It is theft pure and simple! Israel: will people who steal from the taxpayer go to hell?

How about flat tax rate of 20% for everyone earning over $50k, no franking credits, no negative gearing, simplified the tax system. Then we are all equal. The wealthy will have no loopholes and pay their fair share.

Good to see Labor not learning their lesson and staying in opposition for a long time.

By the look on Albo's face there is a bus coming. 👨‍🌾

AustralianLabor The solution is hypothecation. Kill franking credits, use all the revenues to boost the pension: thus, no retiree tax. Kill Stage 2 and 3 tax cuts for the rich, use all the revenues to cut taxes on the poor: thus, no tax hikes. auspol

Senior Labor figure Linda Burney ‘saddened’ by Q&A question on raceA senior Labor figure was left “saddened” by a Q&A question about the role of race in modern Australia, but her powerful response drew warm applause from the audience. All Australians should be equal not some more equal than others. If individual Australians need additional assistance due to remote locations, health, inability to learn, special needs they should get it but not on race or it is racism. So saying that everyone should be treated equally, regardless of race is 'disgusting' now? We've moved way past the left calling for equality. Now they're calling for outright racism, but it's the 'good' kind of racism so that makes it OK, apparently. A racist response to a quite reasonable question. LindaBurneyMP is happy to divide Australia based on race & supposed victimhood. So much for being treated according to the content of your character, rather than the colour of your skin.
