What's polluting our Yarra River the most? Polystyrene. And the Yarra Riverkeeper Association is working out where it's all coming from.

"Studies we have been doing … show that 50 per cent of non-organic litter in the river is polystyrene and 30 per cent is drinking bottles," says Yarra riverkeeper Andrew Kelly.

The most common types of polystyrene found in the Yarra catchment were protective packaging for white goods and electronics, polystyrene balls and food and drink packaging such as foam coffee cups and trays. The Environment Protection Authority said it took all reports regarding pollution and waste seriously.

"We regularly pick up any foam that may have been blown by the wind in our yard," the spokesman said in an email. Big W said it had standard procedures for waste management including responsible disposal of plastics and packing materials that may include polystyrene.."We have not been made aware that any polystyrene has gone into the river. If the Yarra Riverkeeper Association wants to contact us about ways we can improve our processes, we would be happy to have the conversation," a spokesman said.

Keep cups are the go...

All the coffees I purchase now come in paper cups that can be recycled, same as straws, not sure about those white plastic lids though.

Caught a e-bike bike last week, fishing near the Studley Park road bridge........weighed in at 30 kgs.

Hey ClimateChange alarmists, how about some pesonal initiative? Go clean up these piles rubbish, if you care about the environment

I guess I'm probably in my own little bubble on this one, but who uses polystyrene cups Get a water bottle and a keep cup people. Or just sit down for a minute and use a cup/glass.

Where's the Liberal party on this Pollution plastics polluting the waterways & flowing into oceans. who's responsible for toxic imports what no practical action. no picking up the mess

Thanks boomers
