John Bongiorno grew up as the son of an illegal bookmaker, with Flemington on his doorstep. Now he’s aiming to win the Melbourne Cup for a second time.

For John Bongiorno, the magic of the Melbourne Cup never fades – even as he prepares to saddle up his 11th and 12th runners in the great race.

“It’s every owner’s dream and the race every owner aspires to be in. Even though there are races that are worth more money it’s still Australia’s iconic race,” Bongiorno says.“I’ve said to the other owners, just enjoy the lead-up because sometimes after the Cup it can feel a bit like the death of a relative.”

Not that it’s been all smooth sailing. Bongiorno says the horse’s impressive race record – eight wins from 33 starts, and a slashing second in the Moonee Valley Cup two weeks ago – doesn’t tell the story of her attitudinal issues.“She was mad. She just needed unbelievable care and attention and Grahame Begg has done an extraordinary job for a small trainer.”
