The Matildas were brave in defeat, fighting back from 4-1 down in the 51st minute to have a chance of sending the game into extra time in the dying stages. Alanna Kennedy's attempt at clearing a bouncing ball from the penalty area came off the side of her foot, straight into the pass of Rapinoe, who clean-hit her volley into the back of the Australian net.With the shadows of half-time approaching, Australia again gave up position in their own half of the field, with the US displaying their ruthlessness in front of goal again.
They did well. It was a nail biting game.
