For decades, makeup brands have largely geared their products towards people with light to medium skin tones, mostly neglecting those with deeper complexions.Rumbi Dzaimudzengi started running workshops to help young girlsWhile the beauty industry has slowly started increasing the range of products they offer and new brands have emerged, many established makeup companies available in Australia still fail to cater for darker skin.
"I remember going to some of the big [retailers] and I was looking for foundation and I couldn't find anything in my shade," she said. "I've got two nieces here in Australia and they're black, and I want them to feel like they can see themselves, they can look up to somebody and know hey, you're welcome, you're accepted, and it's okay to embrace who you are, it's okay to embrace your identity and you don't have to water down who you are just to fit into society.
"We agree completely that it's important that our product range reflects the diversity of our customers and community," a spokeswoman said."Clearly we're one of a number of retailers in the beauty industry, and it's going to take an industry-wide effort to solve the matters you've raised but we are committed to playing our part."Ms Dzaimudzengi said she hoped to raise awareness about the lack of diversity and representation in the makeup and beauty world.
What you mean by a women of colour?
A quick google search shows 10 brands available in Australia that offer make-up for those with black or dark skin, so maybe we're not quote as racist as some would have us believe. ABCWatch
Isn't that cultural appropriation?
Australia definitely needs more diversity in makeup at the lower price point. Darker skin is so often excluded from the ranges of the larger brands or they have only minimal choice, and then it’s not stocked in stores. 25 pale shades and 2 dark is not good enough.
