A Melbourne science teacher has been remembered as 'delightful, romantic, caring and funny' after she tragically drowned trying to help a teenager at Venus Bay in Gippsland last week | rachael_dexter

A Melbourne science teacher has been remembered as "delightful, romantic, caring and funny" after she tragically drowned trying to help a teenager at Venus Bay in Gippsland last week.

"Everyone gets to know the story of how she died as a hero, but currently the last image I have of her is her on the beach and it's very hard to sleep right now." "She always found joy in teaching and helping others. That's who she was. Her last words were a joke to comfort someone whose teenage daughter was drowning in the ocean," Mr Murphy said.

"There's never a point where I am feeling that survivor's guilt of, 'Oh I could have said something to stop her, I could have run and tackled her,' because she was gone before I could do anything and at the end of the day, even if I had said something, it's who she was," he told Nine News.Although Ms Mandeltort is being remembered publicly as a hero for her actions, Mr Murphy said she should be remembered for the rich and complex life she led.
