ANALYSIS: The Lawyer X royal commission is a $100m handball and Victoria Police still has questions to answer

The McMurdo royal commission has finally reported what has been glaringly obvious for years: Victoria Police was willing to bend the rules and use a criminal barrister against her infamous clients to secure gangland convictions.

The tantalising mail from Nicola Gobbo came at a time when police had dropped the ball on gathering criminal intelligence.Ms Gobbo presented a golden opportunity for police to quickly get up to speed. But unravelling the once-praised efforts of the gangland-busting Purana taskforce Mr Overland headed is now a costly task.Margaret McMurdo, a former president of the Queensland Court of Appeal, presided over the two-year inquiry. The job is not necessarily straightforward for whoever is appointed as special investigator to gather evidence on possible criminal offences committed by Ms Gobbo and police.

Detectives investigating the notorious 2004 murders of police informers Terrence and Christine Hodson told the royal commission their investigation was nobbled by senior officers who were more concerned about protecting Nicola Gobbo's informer status than solving the double murder. While her inquiry did not make findings of fault on this issue, Ms McMurdo appears to acknowledge the terrible impact for the surviving children of the Hodsons, who have not seen justice done.

Jason Roberts will get a retrial after it was revealed evidence relied on to convict him had been backdated.
