An auction bidder pays $750,000 for 'the last car ever produced at Holden Australia' — even though General Motors says 'absolutely the last Holden' is sitting in the National Motor Museum, not for sale.

A bidder has paid $750,000 for "the last car ever produced at Holden Australia" — even though General Motors says "absolutely the last Holden" is on display at the National Motor Museum in Birdwood, South Australia.General Motors says the last is not for sale but is on display at a museumThe historically significant vehicle was expected to fetch about $500,000 at auction on Saturday, but exceeded expectations.

Mr Hames, the chief operating officer of Lloyds Auctioneers and Valuers, said the Commodore sold on Saturday had been destined for sale at a dealership before an ex-Holden factory worker "intercepted" it. "So he made as many phone calls as he possibly could to connect with the dealership and make a private sale for that car."It never made it to the dealership. He managed to intercept the car before it did."

The car that was auctioned was "the last body to leave the bodyshop and enter/exit the paintshop — not to come off the general assembly line itself," the US company"Therefore, and very importantly from a heritage perspective, the vehicle in the National Motor Museum in Birdwood, SA … is absolutely the last Holden.

The last Holden was signed by all employees and is parked in a museum.

$750000 for a questionable'Last Holden'? I don't think so. Hate to see the depreciation when leaving the auction? Try reselling it as a 'Last Holden Car Rollout' when there's one sitting in a museum claiming the same status? Bad investment. Not a bad looking sedan though! 🚗

Nice car, if you cn afFORD it.

Bension1 GM Holden did not prepare for peak oil - since 1998 (Part 1: The Howard years)

Sad. We don’t have our car industry. It is actually a national security problem. If you don’t make cars here how can you make tank? Same as airplane, medical equipments and so on. Rely on your allies? See EU now has embargo on vaccine.

The last bastion of bogan shite..!

Its not electric, maybe that's why it is the last.

It’s not the last Holden. That last one is in a Museum.

It’s definitely a car.

Not worth it

Well, there are clearly people with more money than sense! It could be a lemon, you know?

Petrol powered cars like this will soon be viewed like asbestos and cigarettes and only toxic old white men will be willing to be associated with them.

Thanks to LNP.😢

A national tragedy. We are no longer smart enough to make cars.

Would be great if an Australian company bought the Holden name and started making EVs

Don't take it to the shopping centre car park!

Sold as the last one, but if not, the buyer has just been ripped off

So it sold for a fraction of its manufacture cost once taxpayer subsidies are factored in.

Should be permanently parked outside parliament house as a constant reminder of the shitfuckery our government did to our manufacturing industry.

As long as it was red.

Good riddance to these toxic fart boxes. Bring on the EV revolution.

Should belong in the national museum....technically Australian taxpayers paid for it with hundreds of millions of subsidies to Holden to stay open! auspol

GM Australia celebrates as sale of this Holden doubles sales numbers for the quarter.

its wheel is a deal its sale o the fuking century

The LNP think Australia is a basket case that couldn't build a canoe let alone a car. They see Australia as a third world nation despite it's abundance of wealth and skill set.

Iconic 1980 Holden Commodores could fetch seven figures in record-breaking auctionOwners of highly-sought after vintage Holdens are striking while the iron is hot with two impeccable Commodores set to fetch $1 million when they go under the gavel. I'm looking forward to electric cars. Cheaper, faster, more torque, more flexible (charge them by solar panel on a camping trip in the desert). But a good investment would be a V8 before 2030. Put it in the shed for 20 years.
