Many are horrified at the idea of moving Australia Day but the truth is that it hasn’t always been celebrated on January 26.

January 26 commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove but the first of the 11 ships actually arrived at Botany Bay more than a week before, on January 18, 1788.

She said January 26 was initially referred to as “First Landing Day” or “Foundation Day” and early settlers held anniversary dinners to commemorate the occasion. But the popularity of January 26 did grow and by 1888, “Anniversary Day” as it was then known, was a holiday in all capital cities except Adelaide.

The first “Australia Day” was actually held on July 30, 1915 to raise funds for the World War I effort. It was celebrated on many other different days. Source: SuppliedIt wasn’t until 1935 that all states adopted a common date and name for Australia Day to be held on January 26.

Why do you bring up the old war bonds days? They’re not official Australia days but titled and pushed for bonds for the war... it’s disingenuous to compare those days with an offical Australia Day.

Why should we move it! Honestly, really think some of complaining folk need to get lives, maybe jobs!

Every year, this pic gets posted as proof of some argument against Aus Day when it's simply a pic of some lapel pins made to promote fund-raising during WW1 & not related to the celebration of Jan 26 at all.

Jesus want born on 25Th of dec but it works for us ..

They’re horrified about changing a date but not horrified at all about what the Aboriginals had to go through on their own Land? I bet they’re also the same people of “all lives matter”....

Moving the Date won't change shit. Those that are angry and upset will still be. 98% of people that killed their loved one's murderer, felt no different afterwards. These people need help to deal with what ever they need to deal with. I am Ngarrindjeri and I say No to change

Which country celebrates invasion ? No one they all celebrate independence so the date should be changed to satisfy the indigenous people, simple. AustraliaDay Australia changethedate

How about it is left on Jan 26 for us that are happy with it & the others that are having a bubble can vote between them on another day? But in the mean time those that have an issue can attend work on AD ok standard pay 👍🏻

If the date moves they will find another day to whinge about.

There is too much pandering to a very small percentage of the population.

Are people really horrified at moving it? For all of my life I can't recall anyone ever giving a rats about Australia day.

Actually it has always been on the 26th

Same old anti Australian vomit from the rats at

Who cares if it's set in stone? Point is whether something is right or wrong. First fleet landed the 26th, right?

However it is now CharisChang2 so suck it up buttercup

26 January 1949..... do some research

Nothing will change what has happened. For want of a better name it is history and we all have to live with it, use it, to make the present and the future better.

Australians have ‘risen above our brutal beginnings’, PM saysScott Morrison says there is no escaping or cancelling Australia’s history and January 26 represents the day the land “changed forever”. rharris334 I'm still laughing about our patriotic PM saying the '12 ships'. The bonehead didn't even know how many prison ships landed. Typical of a middle manager who has risen well beyond his capabilities. What a fucking goose. rharris334 At this point he must be doing it on purpose. rharris334 👍👍
